Glasgow Day 4

We went to Fort Peck Lake today. It was our "heaven" when we were kids. I managed to get some great pictures and we had a tour of the power plant. So here goes and enjoy!

This is the cabin we had. It is about 28 years old.

The back side of the cabin.

pic_4.jpg (11323 bytes)

This is York island. We used to water ski out to it!

pic_3.jpg (7191 bytes)

A view from the top of the spillway facing the lake.

pic_5.jpg (10828 bytes)

This is the side of the spillway that faces the Missouri River. When the lake gets too high, the Corps of Engineers will open the gates to let water out. It is rare that they do this.

This shot is straight down. Only about 100 feet!

pic_7.jpg (9698 bytes)

As you can see, the spillway is quite long. Someone even landed their plane in there and took off again!

pic_8.jpg (12626 bytes)

Another view from the top of the spillway facing Fort Peck Lake.

pic_9.jpg (13687 bytes)

This is one of the motors that lifts the gates. Notice the warning horn on the left side.

pic_10.jpg (17754 bytes)

The shed houses a crane that can travel out on the tracks for maintenance of the gates.

pic_11.jpg (15443 bytes)

A very nice shot of the front side of the spillway.

pic_12.jpg (10170 bytes)

This is a close-up of one of the gates. When we were kids, we used to take my parents boat right up to that ladder you see in the center, climb it, and look over the other side. It was a thrill, but they no longer allow it.

pic_13.jpg (9710 bytes)

A close-up of the supporting trusses.

pic_14.jpg (15668 bytes)

My friend Neil. We have known each other all our lives.

pic_15.jpg (16944 bytes)

Just me and the monster.

pic_16.jpg (22194 bytes)

The lake from the top of Signal Hill.

pic_17.jpg (7840 bytes)

And this is Signal Hill.

pic_22.jpg (10841 bytes)

This is where the Missouri River meets the Milk River. Guess which one is which.

pic_18.jpg (9725 bytes)

A great picture of the spillway.

pic_19.jpg (13520 bytes)

A close-up of the gates on the spillway side.

pic_20.jpg (11092 bytes)

The kind of road we traveled to get there!

pic_21.jpg (14699 bytes)

These are the control valves for the tunnels that run to the power plant.

pic_25.jpg (12037 bytes)

This is what the dam looks like with the control valves in the foreground.

pic_26.jpg (10888 bytes)

This should give you an idea of how big the lake is.

pic_27.jpg (8057 bytes)

The power plants. The one in the foreground is the oldest one. The reason they are so tall is that they house surge bins. More on that to come.

pic_29.jpg (12316 bytes)

Continue on to Glasgow 4a for a tour of the power plant!
